1. Exercise

Circle Drill

The circle drill helps you develop consistency with your putts. Place several golf balls in a circle around a hole on a practice green, similar to a clock face. The goal is to make as many consecutive shots as possible. Start at about three feet and gradually increase the distance as you improve. 

Gate Drill

The gate drill helps improve your accuracy and alignment. To start, create a gate by placing two tees, ball markers, or other small objects on the ground, slightly wider than your putter head. They should be set up in a straight line leading to your target, which can be a putting cup or box. The goal is to swing your putter through the gate without disturbing the markers.

Ladder Drill

The ladder drill helps you work on distance control. To start, set up a series of clubs or alignment sticks on the ground at intervals, increasing in distance from the starting point (e.g., 10 yards, 20 yards, 30 yards). It should look like a ladder on the ground. Start with the shortest distance and pitch the ball over each club or stick, trying to land it close to each one.

4. Practice Your Swing

Practice your swing daily. You don’t even need clubs to do so. You can use training aids like alignment sticks, swing trainers, or weighted clubs to work on specific aspects of your swing mechanics and improve consistency. Daily practice also creates muscle memory so that you’re more likely to have great swings on the course. Practice in front of a full-length mirror to observe your posture, alignment, and swing mechanics. Focus on maintaining proper positions throughout the swing and correcting any faults you notice. 

5. Increase Your Swing Speed

Use this time to work on your swing speed. Faster swing speed allows you to hit further, which can significantly impact your game for the better. The off-season is the perfect time to establish a regular speed training habit so you can wow your friends once the season opens back up.

Remember, your physical condition influences your swing speed a great deal, so don’t skip out on exercising. Focus on power exercises that involve explosive movements, like medicine ball throws, plyometric jumps, and kettlebell swings. These exercises can help develop fast-twitch muscle fibers and increase overall power output.

Prior to hitting full shots, warm up properly with dynamic stretching exercises and light swings to prepare your muscles and joints for the demands of the golf swing. A proper warm-up can help increase swing speed and reduce the risk of injury (we call that a win-win).
